Boat Operators and Fishmongers Embark on Sit-Down Strike in Buipe Over Premix Fuel Shortage

A severe shortage of premix fuel has prompted boat operators and fishmongers on the Black Volta at Buipe in the Central Gonja district of the Savannah Region to commence a sit-down strike. The lack of this essential fuel has halted their operations, causing significant distress in the community.

According to Victoria Anjala, President of the Fishmongers Association, some boat operators have been stranded on the Black Volta due to the fuel shortage. “Without premix fuel, we are unable to work, leading to an increase in fish prices in the market,” she explained. Anjala appealed to the government for immediate intervention, warning that without fuel, their fish stocks risk spoiling.

Florence Dowsah, organizer of the Fishmongers Association in Buipe, highlighted the broader impact of the fuel shortage. “The lack of premix fuel has left our husbands, who are boat operators, unemployed, heightening their financial struggles,” she noted. Dowsah issued a stern warning to the government, stating that if the situation persists, the community might boycott the 2024 elections.

David Godze, Chairman of the Boat Operators Association, confirmed that they have not received any premix fuel in Buipe for the past year. “This prolonged shortage has devastated our business operations,” he said. Godze urged the government to provide the necessary fuel supply promptly, or they will continue their strike.

In response to the crisis, Ben Gbagbladza, the coordinator for premix fuel in Buipe, acknowledged the significant challenge the district faces. He called for patience from the boat operators and assured them that efforts are underway to resolve the issue soon.
