“Don’t Boast About Your Achievements, Let the People Speak – GNAT”
- GNAT warns politicians to create jobs or face demonstrations.
- 1.9 million youth and 1.2 million females have no employment, education, or training.
- Government urged to act swiftly to address unemployment crisis.
- Failure to act may lead to agitations and demonstrations.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern warning to politicians to create jobs immediately or face the consequences of agitations and demonstrations before the end of the year. According to the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko, the recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) on job creation in Accra is a cause for concern.
The GSS report reveals alarming statistics, including 1.9 million youth with no employment, education, or training, and 1.2 million females in the same situation. Furthermore, the report shows that over 790,000 males also lack education, employment, and training. The Ghana Statistical Service has warned that the situation could become even more dire if the government fails to take swift action.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed similar concerns about youth unemployment on June 11, 2024, predicting that it could lead to demonstrations and agitations, especially with the upcoming elections. A month after Bagbin’s warning, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko, is sounding the alarm, citing the GSS report as evidence of the need for urgent action.
Tanko emphasized that despite government policies aimed at creating jobs, more needs to be done to address the crisis. He cautioned politicians not to take the situation lightly, stating, “When your policies are doing well, the people themselves will tell you… Nobody should praise himself; this one is a clear danger.”
Tanko urged President Akufo-Addo and politicians to take immediate action to prevent the impending danger, reminding them that the constitution grants sovereignty to the people, who will hold them accountable for their actions.
