Concerned residents of Kpone in the Greater Accra Region have taken to the streets to protest the deplorable state of their roads, which have been abandoned for years. The residents, comprising community members from Community 25, Prampram, Dawhenya, Devtraco, and surrounding areas, are dissatisfied with the condition of their roads, which they say has significantly impacted their lives and businesses.
The 17-kilometer Kpone-Dawhenya road construction project, which was launched four years ago, has been halted with no signs of contractors returning to the site. According to the protesters, the appalling condition of the Kpone to Dawhenya road is affecting their businesses, health, and psychological well-being.
Frana Abay-Wuni, the lead organizer of the demonstration, urged the Minister for Roads and Highways to provide a clear explanation for the halt in construction work and demanded immediate action to address the situation. Abay-Wuni emphasized that the community has been suffering for years, with no progress on the road project despite the president’s assurance four years ago.
She highlighted the challenges they face daily, including spending hours in traffic, which has resulted in children sleeping in vehicles on their way to school and even a reported case of a former MP who passed away due to inability to access medical care in time. The residents have threatened to stage several protests if their demands are not met, calling on the government to take immediate action to address the deplorable state of their roads.
They emphasized that their lives are in danger due to the poor road conditions and urged the government to prioritize their safety and well-being. The protest is a call to action for the government to fulfill its promise and complete the Kpone-Dawhenya road construction project, which has been abandoned for far too long.
