- The officers denied the accusations
A dramatic incident unfolded in Assin Dompim, Central Region, when three officers from the Ghana Immigration Service were accused of stealing GH¢200 from a local trader’s shop.
The officers were on a routine delivery of sachet water from the Immigration Service’s newly established factory in Assin Fosu.
The tension escalated on the evening of Tuesday, July 9, 2024, when the trader, Akos Tiwaa, suspected foul play and devised a trap with marked money. Eyewitnesses claimed the money vanished shortly after the officers finished their delivery.
The disappearance sparked fury among the community, leading to a search for the accused officers. The missing money was later discovered under the doormat of their vehicle, further enraging the crowd who demanded the return of allegedly stolen funds totaling over GH¢20,000.
The situation escalated until police from the Central North Regional Police Command intervened to prevent violence. The officers were safely escorted to the police station amidst denial of the allegations.
The Ghana Immigration Service is yet to release an official statement but is reported to be launching an independent investigation into the incident. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the officers remain innocent until proven guilty.
