The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has forecasted that Ghana’s population will exceed 50 million by 2050, marking a substantial increase from 30.8 million in 2021.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, the population is expected to grow 1.7 times larger than in 2021.
The report identifies Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as remaining the most populous, each with an estimated 7.5 million residents by 2050.
High growth rates are anticipated in the Northern, Northeast, and Savannah regions, where populations are projected to double by 2050.
Additionally, the report highlights significant demographic shifts, including a decrease in the youth population and a rise in the elderly.
Urban areas are set to experience notable expansion, with over half of the regions expected to be urbanized by 2030.
“By the end of the decade (2030), the population is projected to reach 37.2 million people, implying an average annual addition of approximately 711,706 individuals. The urban population is expected to increase from 56.7% to 60.7% between 2021 and 2030.”
“By 2030, more than half of Ghana’s 16 regions are anticipated to be predominantly urbanized. However, seven regions—Volta, Oti, Western North, North East, Upper West, Savannah, and Upper East—will remain predominantly rural.”
