Story Highlights
  • Education Director urges BECE candidates to stay focused.
  • Invigilator arrested for cheating in exam hall.
  • Another invigilator barred for negligence.
  • Ghana Education Service to investigate and discipline involved staff.

The Bono Regional Director of Education, Gabriel Antwi, has urged candidates writing this year’s BECE to remain calm and focused, as the examination is based on what they have learned in school.

During a visit to some examination centers in the Sunyani Municipality, Mr. Antwi interacted with candidates at the Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School, encouraging them to stay focused and warning against individuals claiming to have solutions to questions, locally known as ‘apo’.

This year’s BECE began on Monday, July 8, and a visit to the Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School center revealed the arrest of an invigilator for smuggling his phone into the examination hall to solve questions for candidates.

Gregory Gigera, a Mathematics tutor at Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School, was arrested after he was spotted by the Bono Regional Director of Education, Gabriel Antwi, taking pictures of questions with his mobile phone and solving them for candidates.

The Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East controller of WAEC, Gloria Bayor, handed him over to the police, stating that this would deter others from indulging in such acts. Another invigilator, Augustine Kyeremeh, an ICT tutor at the same school, was also barred from the exercise due to his negligence while some candidates were exchanging their booklets during the exam.

The Public Relations Officer at the Bono Regional Directorate of Education, Luke Mensah, said the Ghana Education Service (GES) will proceed with the matter using its Internal Disciplinary Committee. According to the rules governing the examination, invigilators and candidates are not allowed to bring any gadgets or foreign materials into the examination hall.

The arrest and barring of the two invigilators serve as a warning to others who may attempt to engage in examination malpractice. The Bono Regional Directorate of Education is committed to ensuring the integrity of the examination process and maintaining the highest standards of discipline and fairness.
