Sahel Leaders Forge New Alliance, Prioritize Security and Development

The heads of state from the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES) convened in Niamey, Niger on July 6th to solidify their regional partnership.

The summit marked a significant step for the AES, established in September 2023. Leaders acknowledged progress made, including the adoption of the Liptako-Gourma Charter, which strengthens the organization’s structure.

Looking ahead, the AES announced ambitious plans for an investment bank, a unified military force, and a stabilization fund. These initiatives aim to bolster regional security and economic development.

Following their withdrawal from ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) in January, the AES leaders urged their ministers to develop protocols addressing the implications of this decision. Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso condemned the “inhumane sanctions” imposed by ECOWAS on their citizens.

Freedom of movement for people and goods within the AES is another key priority. All leaders expressed their commitment to making the AES a model of regional cooperation, solidarity, and development. This summit signifies the unwavering resolve of the member states to ensure the organization’s success.
