Ariana Grande Claps Back at Criticism Over Her Voice Change

Ariana Grande has spoken out against the criticism she received over a viral video that showed her switching voices mid-sentence, calling it a “double standard”.

The US popstar had addressed the change in her voice earlier, explaining it was due to habit and vocal health. However, she has now accused critics of sexism, pointing out that men in similar situations are praised for their dedication to their craft.

Grande made her comments on the Shut Up Evan podcast, where she said: “I mean, you see male actors… It’s always after the fact that they’re like, ‘Oh wow, how dedicated to his craft! What an amazing transformation! He’s a brilliant performer!’

And then, god forbid, I sneeze like Glinda or something, or if I make an intonation… it’s just that I’m crazy or ‘Should someone check on her?’ It’s the weirdest thing.”

Grande explained that voices naturally shift registers during conversation, especially for someone with a wide vocal range like hers. She also linked the change to the vocal techniques she employed while filming Wicked.

This is not the first time Grande has addressed her speaking voice, having faced similar critiques in March when she presented at the 2024 Oscars. Despite the comments, Grande has been transparent about altering her voice in preparation for her role as Glinda.
