“Mahama Concedes New Stadium Promise Unrealistic Amid Economic Crisis”

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has acknowledged that promising a new stadium is not feasible amidst the current economic crisis. Ghana has struggled to maintain a modern stadium that meets international football standards, causing issues with getting facilities approved for Ghana’s matches.

In an interaction with journalists on Sunday night, Mahama was questioned on how he plans to address this issue if voted into power in December’s General Elections. Mahama conceded that promising a new stadium is not feasible in the current economic crisis, but emphasized his commitment to investing in infrastructure development.

He explained that under the “big push” initiative, his government intends to spend a significant amount on infrastructure development over five years, including roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and sports facilities. Mahama hinted that if resources are allocated, his government may consider building a new stadium.

The Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium, built for the 2023 African Games, are in good condition to host the competition and are hoped to be maintained for future events.Mahama’s admission comes as he prepares to face Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections in December 2024.

The NDC flagbearer’s comments have sparked debate on the feasibility of promising new infrastructure projects amidst economic challenges. Mahama’s emphasis on infrastructure development and potential investment in sports facilities has been seen as a positive gesture by some, while others remain skeptical about the feasibility of such promises.
