Cameroon FA Chief Eto’o Fined For Betting Deal
- Eto'o Fils fined $200,000
- He faced investigation for alleged match-fixing
- His action violates ethical principles.
Samuel Eto’o Fils, president of Cameroon’s Football Association (FECAFOOT), has been fined $200,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Eto’o, a legendary former striker for Barcelona and Chelsea, faced investigation for alleged match-fixing and violating ethical principles.
While CAF’s Disciplinary Committee found no evidence of match manipulation, they determined his role as a brand ambassador for betting company 1XBET breached ethical codes for football officials.
“Insufficient proof exists to find Mr. Samuel Eto’o Fils… guilty of match manipulation,” stated a CAF press release on Thursday. “However, Mr. Eto’o seriously violated ethics, integrity, and sportsmanship” by accepting a paid ambassadorship with 1XBET.
The CAF statement did not clarify Eto’o’s right to appeal the decision.
This comes roughly three years after Eto’o’s illustrious playing career concluded and his subsequent rise to lead Cameroon’s football association.
