Turkish Defender Demiral Under Scrutiny By UEFA For Celebration Gesture
- Demiral is facing investigation by UEFA
- His celebration of the second goal has sparked controversy
- Demiral claims the celebration was planned beforehand
Turkish footballer Merih Demiral is facing investigation by UEFA after his goal celebration during their Euro 2024 victory over Austria raised concerns.
The 26-year-old defender scored both goals for Turkey, securing their spot in the quarter-finals against Netherlands. However, his celebration of the second goal has sparked controversy.
Demiral performed a “wolf salute,” a gesture linked to the far-right Grey Wolves group, which has ties to Turkey’s ruling National Movement Party. The salute is banned in Austria and France.
Demiral claims the celebration was planned beforehand and expressed his pride in his Turkish heritage as the reason behind it. He shared a photo of the celebration on social media with a patriotic caption.
UEFA has opened an investigation under Article 31(4) citing “alleged inappropriate behaviour.” Demiral could face a fine or suspension if found guilty, potentially impacting Turkey’s upcoming quarter-final match.
This isn’t the only player gesture under UEFA’s microscope. England’s Jude Bellingham is also being investigated for his celebration during their win against Slovakia.
