A 25-year-old woman, Rukaya Hassan, has been apprehended by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for attempting to smuggle two underage girls across the border to the Niger Republic.
According to a statement by the Command Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Abdullahi, the victims, Nabila Ibrahim, 17, and Zainab Ibrahim, 15, were handed over to the National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigations.
During interrogation, Hassan confessed that she was hired by one Maman Adnan to transport the girls to Niger, where they were supposed to work in a restaurant owned by Amina Yunusa. However, the girls revealed that their parents had approved their trip, unaware of the true circumstances.
The Comptroller of Immigration, Tony Akuneme, commended the officers for their hard work and pledged to recognize exceptional personnel. He reiterated the importance of continuing the campaign against human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.
“The Immigration CG expressed gratitude to the officers and men of the Ilela border command for their hard work and pledged to recognize exceptional personnel,” Abdullahi noted in the statement.
