Professor Francis Nkrumah, the eldest son of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died at the age of 89. The cause of his death is yet to be disclosed.
Indian author and editor Vijay Prashad announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Professor Nkrumah’s brother, Sekou Nkrumah, also shared a photo of his deceased brother on Facebook, attracting an outpouring of condolences from social media users.
Professor Francis Nkrumah was a distinguished Emeritus Professor and the longest-serving Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). He was honored for his contributions to poliomyelitis eradication initiatives in Africa and his roles in founding the Pediatric Association of Ghana and the West African College of Physicians.
In 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Region recognized his dedicated efforts in poliomyelitis eradication initiatives in Africa. His legacy in the field of medicine and research will be deeply remembered.
