Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has broken his silence on the recent allegations made by his ex-wife, Adwoa Pinamang. In a statement, Sarpong categorically stated that their marriage collapsed 20 years ago when Pinamang abandoned him and their children.
Pinamang had earlier claimed in a radio interview that Sarpong’s family had denied her access to care for her ailing husband and accused Tiwaa, a female vocalist, of snatching Sarpong with the help of his family. Despite being separated for nearly 20 years, Pinamang claims they are still married and not officially divorced, therefore deserving of treatment as a legitimate wife.
Sarpong clarified that their marriage was not legally formalized and therefore did not require a legal divorce. He explained that he had only undergone traditional rites, presenting a Bible, soft drinks, and a ring. He recounted how Pinamang had abandoned him and their children when he was seriously ill and relocated to Kumasi. Sarpong stated that he has had no communication with Pinamang over the past two decades, making her recent claims and efforts to reconnect surprising.
The veteran musician suspects that Pinamang’s renewed interest might be influenced by the recent GH¢100,000 gift he received from Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Sarpong emphasized that he has moved on but is willing to resolve all outstanding issues with his ex-wife amicably.
“I only did the traditional rites, presenting a Bible, soft drinks, and a ring. We didn’t formalize the marriage legally, so there’s no need for a legal divorce,” Sarpong said. “I’m surprised by her claims and efforts to reconnect after 20 years of no communication. I’ve moved on, but I’m willing to resolve any outstanding issues amicably.”
