- This victory marks their first in Euro 2024
Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is recovering in a Stuttgart hospital after a worrying mid-air clash with Scotland’s Angus Gunn during their Euro 2024 match on Sunday.
Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone and will undergo surgery, according to Hungary manager Marco Rossi. “He’s okay,” Rossi assured, “but unfortunately, the fracture requires surgery. We’ll see if he can return later in the tournament, but for now he’s out.”
The collision halted the match for several minutes as medical personnel tended to Varga on the field. Thankfully, Rossi confirmed that Varga is “healthy and not in any danger.”
The incident, which occurred during a tense moment in the game, left Hungarian players visibly shaken. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai and his teammates rushed to Varga’s side, calling for medical attention and helping bring the stretcher onto the pitch. Rossi explained their concern, stating that Varga appeared unconscious for a moment, which understandably heightened the urgency.
Hungary Triumphs Despite Loss
Despite the setback, Hungary managed a dramatic last-minute win through Kevin Csoboth in the ten additional minutes added for Varga’s injury.
This victory marks their first in Euro 2024, following two earlier losses. With three points, Hungary now has a chance to qualify for the next stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
