The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has allayed fears of potential disruptions to the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), confirming that the exam will proceed as scheduled.
According to WAEC spokesperson John Kapi, the examination body has received a warrant of ₵47.125 million, a partial payment of the over ₵94 million owed to suppliers. Kapi emphasized the urgency of receiving the remaining funds by the end of the week to facilitate timely preparations.
Speaking to JoyNews, Kapi stated, “So, we expect that at least if by the close of this week, the money hits our account that would be good enough to enable us to give out money to people we are going to have to use for the examination because of the urgency of the situation so we get the money in good time.”
Kapi urged prompt payment of the remaining funds to prevent delays in marking and result release. While the received funds will enable the exam to take place, additional funds are required for result processing and release. “When we are done with that we would think about the suppliers and see how much we can pay them while we wait for further funds to be able to clear our indebtedness to them,” he explained.
WAEC aims to deploy staff by July 4, with the examination scheduled to commence on July 8 and conclude on July 15, 2024, across all centers nationwide.
