Myanmar authorities cracked down on supporters of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, arresting 22 people for celebrating her 79th birthday.
Police in Mandalay arrested individuals who wore flowers in their hair, a signature Suu Kyi style, and posted photos online.
Others were detained for praying with flowers in public. The arrests came as Suu Kyi remains in detention, serving a 27-year sentence imposed by a military court.
Despite her imprisonment, Suu Kyi’s supporters continue to show their defiance, risking arrest and persecution.
The military junta has refused to allow foreign leaders to meet with Suu Kyi, who has reportedly suffered health problems in detention.
Her son reported in February that she was in “strong spirits” after receiving a letter from her, their first communication since the coup.
The crackdown on Suu Kyi’s supporters highlights the ongoing struggle for democracy in Myanmar, where the military continues to suppress dissent with force.
