Ghana’s Constitutional Review Consultative Committee (CRCC) has made key recommendations for reforming the country’s governance structure.
Limiting Seats in Parliament:
- The CRCC proposes a cap of 277 Members of Parliament (MPs) by amending Articles 93 and 47 of the Constitution.
- This would consequently limit the number of constituencies created by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Restructuring the Cabinet:
- The President would retain the option to appoint MPs as Ministers.
- A maximum of 25 Ministers would be allowed, eliminating Deputy Minister positions.
Revising the National Security Council:
- The proposed Council would include:
- President and Vice President
- Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Defense, Interior, and Finance
- Chief of Defense Staff and two other military representatives
- Inspector General of Police and two other police representatives
- Head of Ghana Immigration Service
- Ministers overseeing National Security, Economic and Organized Crime, National Signals Bureau, National Fire Service, National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, and National Disaster Management Organization
- Three additional presidential appointees
