A devastating boat accident on the Oti River on Tuesday evening has claimed the lives of 11 people, including two minors. Six survivors have been rescued, while five others remain missing.

According to Mr. Emmanuel Atali, Assembly member of Dambai Lakeside, a swift rescue operation was launched by Navy officials and local boat operators immediately after the incident. Four women, including a baby girl, were rescued and rushed to Dambai Health Centre for intensive care.

The ill-fated boat, which departed from Dambai, was headed towards Njari, a farming and fishing community in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region. Sources revealed that the passengers were returning from Dambai market, a weekly market that takes place every Monday and Tuesday.

Mr. Clement Kwasi Checki, Chairman of Boat Operators, expressed his deep condolences over the tragic incident. “I am deeply grieved by the loss of lives due to the boat accident; my thoughts are with the bereaved families, and I pray to the Almighty to give them strength to withstand this immense loss.”

Rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the five missing persons. The Ghana News Agency reports that searches are still underway as of the time of filing this report.
