The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has kicked off the implementation of the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) program to cover dialysis expenses for kidney patients aged below 18 and above 60.
Under this initiative, eight patients have already availed of the service, with the hospital management confirming that those who had previously paid for dialysis will be reimbursed.
Previously, only 20% of end-stage renal disease patients could afford the vital dialysis sessions, but with NHIA’s support, the hospital anticipates an 80% increase in accessibility.
Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, CEO of NHIA, visited KATH to oversee the initiative’s progress, ensuring the government’s commitment to its successful implementation.
He emphasized NHIA’s readiness to reimburse dialysis costs upon hospitals’ claim submissions, stating, “We have the funds available and will reimburse once claims are processed.”
Dr. Aboagye further highlighted the government’s broader strategy not only for kidney diseases but also for chronic ailments, hinting at forthcoming comprehensive initiatives.
Confirming the rollout, KATH’s Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, assured that patients who began paying for dialysis from June 1 will receive refunds, following a swift implementation process initiated after a stakeholders’ meeting.
