Deputy Information Minister Defends Choice to Forego 5G Network Auction
- Govt has clarified choice to bypass the auctioning process for the 5G network
- Govt's decision is to collaborate with established industry entities
- Govt emphasized its significance as the most effective approach
Deputy Information Minister Sylvester Tetteh has clarified that the government’s decision to bypass the auctioning process for the 5G network contract aims to maximize benefits.
Hon. Tetteh emphasized that the government opted for collaboration with established industry entities, such as Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and other telecom companies, drawing from past experiences.
Speaking in an interview, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro highlighted the creation of a special purpose vehicle for this endeavor as the most effective approach to ensure favorable outcomes.
Tetteh pointed out the limited 4G penetration achieved since its auctioning in 2015, primarily concentrated in urban areas.
He questioned the effectiveness of a similar auctioning strategy for 5G, suggesting that it might prioritize profit over widespread benefit. Instead, the government intends for multiple stakeholders, including itself and industry players, to have a stake in the venture through the special purpose vehicle.
However, investigative journalist Manasseh Awuni Azure is urging the government to substantiate its rationale behind bypassing the auction process for the 5G network contract.
