The Electoral Commission (EC) has taken swift action in response to fraudulent activities during the limited voter registration in Pusiga.
An EC registration officer at the Pusiga District Registration Centre was apprehended for illicitly registering 17 applicants using counterfeit Ghana Card numbers.
After thorough investigation, it was uncovered that the registration officer colluded with party agents to input fabricated card numbers without verifying the physical Ghana Cards.
This breach of protocol transpired on May 13, 2024, prompting the officer’s dismissal and subsequent arrest following the EC’s formal report to law enforcement.
The affected applicants, however, were accommodated through the guarantor system for registration.
Michael Boadu, Acting Director of Public Affairs at the Commission, issued a stern warning against any form of misconduct by EC officials.
He emphasized the Commission’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity and pledged to cooperate with law enforcement to prosecute offenders.
Despite initial challenges, including this incident, Mr. Boadu affirmed that the EC remains on track to register the anticipated 623,000 voters within the designated timeframe.
Additionally, the Commission reiterated its dedication to conducting the voter registration process transparently and inclusively, reassuring stakeholders and the public alike.
