- Manager Jurgen Klopp will also leave the club
Liverpool has confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara and defender Joel Matip will depart the club at the end of the season.
Thiago, 33, joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020 and made 98 appearances, while Matip, 32, played 201 times and scored 11 goals since arriving from Schalke in 2016.
However, both players have struggled with injuries this season, limiting their playing time.
Matip, who last played in December, praised his time at Liverpool, saying, “It has been eight wonderful years…I was part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club.”
Matip was a key player in Liverpool’s Champions League win in 2019 and Premier League title in 2020.
Manager Jurgen Klopp, who will also leave the club after Sunday’s final game against Wolves, hailed Matip as a beloved player, saying, “I’m not sure I’ve come across many players who are more loved than Joel Matip.”
Thiago, a former Spain international, has also had a significant impact during his time at Liverpool, despite his injury struggles this season.”
