Ghana’s Finance Minister Calls for Improved Staff Welfare To Boost Revenue Collection

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has urged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to prioritize staff well-being as a key driver of increased revenue collection.

During a meeting with Customs Division officials at the Aflao border on May 10, 2024, Dr. Adam emphasized the importance of a supportive work environment. He stressed that happy and well-supported staff are more productive and ultimately contribute to achieving revenue targets.

“Staff welfare is at the heart of revenue collection,” Dr. Adam said. “While revenue collection is our core function, your well-being is paramount. By improving staff welfare, we can boost morale and enhance productivity, leading to increased revenue collection.”

Demonstrating his commitment to this approach, Dr. Adam directed the GRA’s Commissioner-General to ensure Customs officials have the necessary resources and logistics. This includes renovations to staff accommodation, creating a more conducive work environment for optimal performance.

“With a focus on staff welfare, we can unleash the full potential of our workforce and drive revenue growth,” Dr. Adam remarked.

The Commissioner-General, Julie Essiam, welcomed the Minister’s initiative and reaffirmed the GRA’s commitment to improving staff welfare and providing adequate resources. She emphasized the importance of ongoing training in tax collection procedures, auditing techniques, and customer service. Equipping staff with these skills will enhance their ability to navigate complex situations, serve taxpayers effectively, and position the GRA as a leading government agency in terms of efficiency.

“Our staff are the backbone of revenue collection,” Ms. Essiam said. “By prioritizing their well-being and equipping them with the necessary tools, we can significantly improve our efficiency and effectiveness.”

The Minister’s focus on staff welfare resonated with the Customs officials who expressed appreciation for his humane approach.

This meeting highlights a shift in strategy for the GRA, placing employee well-being at the forefront of revenue collection efforts.
