- A Kenyan man receives a 30-year prison sentence
- The court highlighted the devastating consequences of the attack
- Kombe's claims of self-defense were dismissed
Mohamed Mwarandu Kombe, a Kenyan man, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for a brutal acid attack on his former girlfriend, Fatuma Kaingu, that left her permanently blind.
Magistrate Gladys Olimo condemned the attack, emphasizing the irreversible damage inflicted on Ms. Kaingu. “She will never regain her sight and will miss out on everyday experiences,” stated the magistrate.
Kombe’s claim that the liquid was soap used in self-defense was dismissed due to overwhelming evidence. The prosecution successfully argued for a harsh sentence due to the severity of the crime and its lifelong consequences for the victim.
Despite Kombe’s pleas for leniency due to his family, the court prioritized holding him accountable. The magistrate acknowledged his family situation but stressed the need for him to face the repercussions of his actions.
The 30-year sentence aims to deter future acts of violence. The court prioritized protecting victims and ensuring justice is served in such heinous crimes.
