Gunshots rang out at a voters registration centre in the Cape Coast North constituency on Thursday morning, as tensions between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) escalated into violence.

According to the media, the gunshots were fired by men allegedly guarding the NPP parliamentary candidate, Horace Ekow Ewusi.

The incident occurred when a group of people, reportedly bused from Moree in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency, attempted to register at the centre. NPP members present vowed to prevent them from registering, leading to a heated altercation with NDC supporters.

In the chaos that ensued, the phone of NDC Constituency Youth Organizer, Godfred Onso Nyameye, was seized, further fueling the tensions. NPP candidate Horace Ekow Ewusi was subsequently chased from the registration centre and driven away in his car.

The limited registration exercise has been marred by violence and intimidation in various parts of the country, with political parties trading blame over the disturbances. The incident in Cape Coast North constituency is the latest in a series of clashes between NPP and NDC supporters.
