The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that errors found in registration slips do not affect a voter’s eligibility, despite recent concerns over discrepancies in voter information.
In response to a viral video depicting a Voter’s ID Card displaying conflicting registration details – showing registration at Kasoa in the Central Region while listing the district as Ayawaso North in the Greater Accra Region – the EC issued a statement on May 8th. Signed by Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, the release emphasized that such errors, while appearing on the registration slip, do not reflect on the final Voter’s ID Card.
“The slip serves merely as a reference for replacing the ID card, and any mistakes therein do not impact the voter’s eligibility status.”
Furthermore, the EC acknowledged that such errors were not uncommon and assured the public that corrective measures were in place. The commission regularly displays registers to rectify such discrepancies. It also announced that any mistakes made during the ongoing limited voter registration would be addressed during the Voters Exhibition Exercise.
To facilitate this correction process, the EC announced the opening of the register from Monday, July 15th, to July 24th, allowing voters to review and rectify any errors in their registration details.
Addressing the specific issue highlighted in the circulating Voter ID Card, the EC attributed the discrepancy to a data entry error and reiterated that such occurrences were not unusual. The law provides provisions for voters to amend any inaccuracies during the Voters Exhibition Exercise.
In reaffirming its commitment to fulfilling its mandate, the EC assured the public of its dedication to ensuring a fair and accurate electoral process.
