Imagine traveling by train between Europe and Africa! Spain is exploring a groundbreaking project: an underwater railway tunnel connecting them with Morocco, a land rich in culture and beauty.

These two countries, separated by a mere 29 kilometers of the Strait of Gibraltar, are both tourist magnets for Europeans.

Many travelers enjoy combining a Spanish getaway with adventures in Moroccan cities like Casablanca or Fez. Currently, planes and ferries dominate travel across the Strait. But a train tunnel could revolutionize transportation.

The idea of a Gibraltar rail tunnel isn’t new. Inspired by the successful Channel Tunnel connecting Britain and France, it first surfaced in 1979.

This ambitious project, if completed, would see a 27-kilometer underwater tunnel linking Europe’s high-speed rail network with North Africa by 2030.

The timing isn’t coincidental. In 2030, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will co-host the FIFA World Cup, making a seamless connection between continents even more desirable.
