Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a respected member of the National Council of Elders within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently sounded a stern warning regarding the party’s future. He emphasized that unless the party’s members come together in unity prior to the upcoming 2024 general elections, there is a real risk of the party’s dissolution.
Ameyaw-Akumfi stressed the critical importance of unity among NPP members, expressing deep concern that any lingering internal conflicts or disputes could significantly undermine the party’s chances in the forthcoming elections.
This cautionary advice from Ameyaw-Akumfi follows closely on the heels of a notable decision made by the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ntim. Ntim opted to extend an olive branch to Independent Candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi in the aftermath of the Ejisu by-election.
Expressing his support for Ntim’s decision, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi suggested that such efforts at reconciliation should have been undertaken much earlier, ideally immediately following the conclusion of the party’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who had previously raised concerns regarding the delegates’ album, had parted ways with the NPP to pursue his candidacy as an Independent Candidate. Despite his departure, Aduomi mounted a formidable challenge against the NPP’s chosen candidate, Kwabena Boateng, in the by-election. Ultimately, Boateng emerged victorious.
During an interview with Techiman-based Asta FM on Wednesday, May 1, Ameyaw-Akumfi expressed his sentiments, stating, “I was moved by the statement issued by our national chairman regarding his determination to reach out to Aduomi. I firmly believe that these efforts at reconciliation should have been initiated much earlier, particularly in the aftermath of the presidential and parliamentary elections. However, it is not too late. The signs are clear. The NPP must prioritize unity, or else face dire consequences.”
