The Otumfuo Charity Foundation recently donated a new 16-bed maternity block to the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi. The facility, named after the Queen of Ashanti, Nana Konadu Yiadom, features special beds and a comfortable interior design to enhance the experience of pregnant women during childbirth.
Project Background
Professor Oheneba Boachie, Board Chairman of the Foundation, explained that the project originated from an idea by Joseph Magnus Martey Marteye, CEO of Joberg Construction Company. Mr. Marteye initially proposed a construction project to support a specific group of people. However, the Foundation suggested building a maternity block instead, and Mr. Marteye generously agreed to cover half of the project’s cost.
“We are delighted to have Lady Julia Osei Tutu, patron of the Foundation, here today to commission this project, which is so close to the hearts of Otumfuo and Nana Konadu Yiadom,” said Professor Boachie. “We are also grateful to Joberg Construction for the beautiful construction of this facility for the hospital authorities.”
Improved Healthcare Services
Dr. Kamarudeen Korku Hussein, Medical Director of the Manhyia Hospital, provided a brief history of the facility. Established in 1962 as a community clinic, the hospital has grown over the years, becoming an urban center in 1966, a polyclinic in 1976, and finally achieving district hospital status in 2000. Currently, it serves as a referral center for Ashanti and neighboring regions.
“This new 16-bed facility will significantly improve our ability to care for pregnant women,” said Dr. Hussein. “It will eliminate the need for women to deliver on the floor or in corridors. Additionally, the block includes new operating theaters, private and VIP rooms, and other essential spaces to manage deliveries and related emergencies.”
Contractor’s Perspective
Mr. Magnus Joseph Martey Marteye, CEO of Joberg Construction, expressed his gratitude to the Otumfuo Charity Foundation for the opportunity to build a legacy project for the King of Asante. He highlighted the facility’s potential to improve the quality of care for the over 400 patients visiting the Manhyia Government Hospital daily.
“I urge the hospital authorities to meticulously maintain this facility to ensure its longevity and continued service to the community,” remarked Mr. Marteye.
Local Official Commends Project
In an interview, Kumasi Mayor, Hon Samuel Pyne, commended the contractor for delivering the project on time and within budget. He emphasized the importance of proper maintenance by the hospital authorities to ensure the facility serves its purpose for many years to come.
