President Nana Akufo-Addo recently inaugurated a new solar power project in Kaleo, Ghana. This 15-megawatt (MW) addition, funded by a €16 million investment and €30 million from the Volta River Authority (VRA), expands the region’s solar capacity significantly.
Enhancing Power and Sustainability
The project is part of a larger initiative to improve the quality and reliability of power supply in the Upper West Region. Phase I, a 13MW project, was completed in August 2022. Together, these phases bring Kaleo’s total solar capacity to 28MW and the region’s capacity to 34.5MW.
The project, executed by Elecnor SA (Spain) with consultancy from Tractebel Engineering (Germany), is financed by the German Development Bank. Beyond providing power, the project aims to:
- Increase Ghana’s renewable energy generation through the VRA
- Reduce reliance on fossil fuels
- Lower national carbon emissions
Benefits Beyond Power
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the project’s role in combating climate change and fostering sustainable development. He also highlighted the potential for economic growth and job creation in the region.
Deputy Energy Minister Herbert Krapa addressed the recent power outages, assuring Ghanaians that solutions are underway to restore reliable power.
The VRA Board Chair, Kofi Tutu Agyare, pointed to additional benefits for the Kaleo community. The project will provide opportunities for technical and engineering students to gain practical experience in solar power.
Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu sees the project as a symbol of hope and inspiration for future generations, representing progress towards a more sustainable future.
