A delegation from the Lagos State House of Assembly expressed satisfaction during a visit to Jospong Group facilities in Accra, Ghana. The lawmakers commended the company’s subsidiaries for their environmentally friendly waste management operations.
“We were impressed by both the solid and liquid waste treatment plants,” said Engr. Mahmoud Kunle Adegbite, Permanent Secretary for Lagos’ Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources. “These facilities prioritize environmental protection, and we’re looking to upgrade Lagos’ waste management system based on the Jospong Group model.”
The delegation, led by Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun, Chairman of the Committee on Public Private Partnership, is on a two-day fact-finding mission. Their goal is to assess the feasibility of establishing a similar recycling and composting plant in Lagos with Jospong Group’s partnership.
Jospong’s Sustainable Solutions for Lagos
Mr. Peter Dagadu, Jospong Group’s Project Lead for the Lagos project, explained that the visit aims to familiarize the delegation with Ghana’s waste management model. This understanding will be crucial for implementing a similar project in Lagos.
The delegation visited various Jospong subsidiaries, including:
- Zoomlion Transfer Stations
- Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP)
- J.A. Plant Pool Ghana Limited
- Sewerage Systems Ghana Ltd.
ACARP, in particular, caught the lawmakers’ attention. They learned about ACARP’s integrated approach to waste processing and recycling. The plant not only generates organic fertilizer but also addresses plastic waste through sorting, processing, and recycling.
Transforming Lagos Through Waste Management
The Lagos State government partnered with Jospong Group earlier this year to construct a waste treatment plant in Lagos. This integrated facility is expected to significantly improve waste management in Africa’s most populous city.
The project involves establishing various waste management solutions, including:
- Material Recovery Facility to reduce landfill waste
- Compact/Mobile Transfer Stations to replace existing stationary plants and reduce waste build-up at collection points
- Repurposing of the Olusosun Landfill into a Material Recovery Facility
- Supplying self-tipping tricycles to enhance transfer and loading station operations
- Building a bin manufacturing and plastic recycling plant to streamline recycling activities
This project is expected to not only improve sanitation in Lagos but also boost Nigeria’s environmental sustainability efforts. According to a report by the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, the state generates a staggering 13,000 tons of waste daily.
