The Chief of Staff of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Hon Akosua Frema Osei Opare has pleaded for Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intervention in the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill by Parliament.
Hailing the King for his highest regard for the welfare of women and his commitment to women’s empowerment, the country’s first female chief of staff underscored the urgency for the passage of the bill which is currently pending before the eighth Parliament.
“Asantes practice the matrilineal system and we know your contribution to women’s development and empowerment. For the first time in Asante history, women have joined the Asanteman Council. We thank you a lot. We know how we are important in Asanteman. That is why there is a saying that old women have the answer to all things. Our women, especially queen mothers possess the wisdom and knowledge in amicably resolving disputes,” she said while speaking at the Queen Mothers’ Day and Food Fair at the Manhyia Palace on April 22, 2024.
She added, “This event is encouraging to women…We have submitted the Affirmative Action Bill to Parliament; however, no action has been taken about it. I would like to plead that you intervene for its passage.”
The bill which seeks to increase women’s participation in decision-making spaces in the country was introduced to the country in the 60s and is yet to receive parliamentary approval.
The bill was reviewed by the Cabinet and resent to parliament on September 29, 2023, under a certificate of urgency; however, it appears to have been abandoned.
