Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has staunchly condemned the practice of LGBTQ in Ghana, expressing his strong disapproval during a public address in Kumasi.
Speaking to a large gathering of Muslims during Eid prayers, Dr. Bawumia unequivocally rejected the notion of LGBTQ, aligning his stance with both his personal beliefs and the principles of his religion, Islam, as well as Ghanaian cultural and social norms.
Addressing the issue directly, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghanaian society, rooted in its cultural and societal values, overwhelmingly rejects homosexuality.
He further underscored the consistent opposition to LGBTQ within Islam, citing the teachings of the Holy Quran as explicitly prohibiting such acts, including same-sex marriages. Dr. Bawumia emphasized the unwavering nature of his stance, leaving no room for ambiguity or compromise.
Highlighting the broader consensus across major religions in Ghana, including Christianity and Islam, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to opposing LGBTQ both personally and, should he assume the presidency, in an official capacity.
Notably, Ghana’s Parliament has passed legislation targeting LGBTQ, awaiting presidential approval. However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cited legal challenges to its constitutionality, delaying its enactment as human rights activists contest its legality in court.
