add three story highlights Unemployed nurses and midwives in Kumasi staged a protest on Monday, expressing their frustration over delayed job postings and the government’s failure to provide financial clearance for permanent placements. The demonstrators, comprised of graduates from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 cohorts from various public universities and Nursing Training Colleges, rallied for their rights.
Despite efforts to rally more participants through public announcements, the turnout remained low. Nevertheless, those present were resolute in highlighting their grievances. The prolonged wait for postings has compelled many of these professionals to explore alternative employment opportunities.
Haruna Ibrahim, the President of the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, lamented the repeated assurances from authorities regarding discussions between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance concerning their clearance, which have yielded no results. Furthermore, there are suspicions that some individuals are obtaining financial clearance and postings through corrupt means, namely bribery.
Mr. Ibrahim warned that unless their demands are addressed, the association intends to stage further protests, including picketing at the Finance and Health Ministries. He highlighted instances where promises of imminent action were made, only to be met with continued delays. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the alleged preferential treatment of certain individuals who could afford bribes ranging from 5000 to 10000, resulting in expedited postings.
