Lionesses defender Leah Williamson to make her first start in almost a year against Republic of Ireland.
The 27-year-old is poised for a comeback after a grueling recovery from an ACL injury sustained in April 2023. This sidelined her from last year’s World Cup, a period she describes as emotionally challenging.
Williamson was included in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for the ongoing Euro 2025 qualifiers and featured as an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw with Sweden. However, manager Wiegman confirmed Williamson will be starting in their upcoming match against the Republic of Ireland.
Expressing her emotions, Williamson acknowledged the difficulty of watching the team from the sidelines during the World Cup. She’s excited to be back in the fold and contribute on the pitch.
“This is where I wanted to get back to,” Williamson said. “I wanted to be good enough to get back into this squad… I had some of the best memories of my life as part of this team.”
