Ghana to receive critical medical supplies after intervention by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
A shipment of $45 million worth of medical supplies, vital for fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, was stuck at port due to unpaid fees. Recognizing the urgency, Ms. Julie Essiam, Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA, met with the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) to find a solution.
Prioritizing Public Health
While acknowledging the importance of revenue collection, Ms. Essiam emphasized the GRA’s commitment to public health. She pledged to work with the Ministries of Finance and Health to ensure a swift release of the supplies.
Collaboration for a Smooth Release
The meeting resulted in a collaborative approach. The GRA will work with relevant ministries to expedite the release process while adhering to proper procedures. Ms. Essiam highlighted the importance of ongoing communication with stakeholders across all sectors.
Progress and Long-Term Solutions
The first batch of medical supplies is expected to be released this week. However, stakeholders acknowledge the need for long-term solutions, such as exploring sustainable financing mechanisms for essential health programs.
Appreciation for Intervention
The prompt action by Ms. Essiam was praised by stakeholders, particularly the CCM’s Acting Chair, Mr. Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin. He commended her solution-oriented approach and looks forward to continued collaboration with the GRA.
