Everton suffer another points deduction for breaching Premier League financial regulations.
The Merseyside club has been hit with a further two-point penalty by an independent commission. This comes after a hearing regarding their financial performance for the 2022-23 season, which violated the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
This latest deduction drops Everton to 16th in the standings, just two points above the relegation zone. It marks their second PSR violation this season, following a previous six-point deduction (originally ten points) for the 2021-22 period.
Appeals on Both Sides
Everton have confirmed they will appeal this recent penalty. The Premier League also holds the right to appeal for a harsher punishment.
Everton’s Defense
The club maintains that a further sanction was unnecessary. They argue that the commission recognized several mitigating factors, including the potential for “double punishment” due to the previous deduction and the impact of the war in Ukraine. They also highlight their cooperation and early admission of the breach.
