The head of the Vatican’s doctrine office, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, has spoken out against the criminalization of homosexuality. This stance comes despite support for such laws from some Catholic groups in various countries.
While presenting a publication that reaffirmed the Church’s opposition to sex changes, gender theory, and surrogacy, Cardinal Fernandez condemned laws punishing homosexuality, calling them “a big problem.” He emphasized the Church’s disapproval of criminalization.
This position aligns with Pope Francis’ recent statements. In February 2023, the Pope denounced criminalizing LGBTQ+ people as an act of “sin and injustice,” highlighting God’s love for all. He cited statistics suggesting widespread criminalization of LGBTQ+ individuals, with some countries even imposing the death penalty.
Under Pope Francis’ leadership, the Catholic Church has shown a shift towards greater inclusivity for LGBTQ+ people. Notably, in December 2023, Cardinal Fernandez’s office issued a document permitting blessings for same-sex couples, a decision that sparked significant conservative opposition.
