Spanish authorities detained Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), upon his arrival in Madrid.
He faces corruption allegations related to a lucrative deal to host the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Prosecutors suspect Rubiales of receiving illegal commissions during the negotiation process. He denies any wrongdoing and is contesting a potential two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
Authorities detained Rubiales after his plane landed from the Dominican Republic. This follows searches of his home and the RFEF headquarters last month, which also resulted in several arrests.
Separately, Rubiales is due to face trial for sexual assault charges stemming from an unwanted kiss on player Jenni Hermoso after the Women’s World Cup final.
Both Hermoso and her teammates consider the kiss inappropriate and demeaning. Rubiales resigned under pressure but maintains his innocence.
