The Chieftaincy Ministry is investigating the controversial marriage between a 63-year-old traditional priest and a minor.
The priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, who serves at the Gborbu Wulomo shrine in Nungua, recently married 12-year-old Naa Ayemoede in a ceremony that has sparked outrage.
Minister Stephen Amoah Boateng in an interview pledged a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the marriage.
“We are talking about a minor here,” he emphasized. The Ministry is collaborating with traditional authorities and law enforcement to investigate the matter and determine the necessary course of action. They are also attempting to reach Naa Ayemoede’s family.
This case highlights the ongoing tension between cultural traditions and child protection laws. While some defend the marriage as a fulfillment of religious practice, others condemn it as a violation of the young girl’s rights. The Chieftaincy Ministry’s investigation aims to shed light on this complex situation.
