The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Akatsi South, Daniel Dagbah, in collaboration with the Police, has impounded a private Toyota Venza allegedly carrying a large quantity of marijuana.
The vehicle was involved in an accident at the Monome Bypass Junction in Akatsi, located in the Volta Region.
The black Toyota Venza, which carried two different registration numbers — GS 234-17 and GC 7258-13 — reportedly somersaulted and landed in a bush after allegedly being pursued by security personnel.
Mr. Dagbah, who also serves as Chairman of the Akatsi South Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), rushed to the scene upon receiving an alert around 6:40 p.m. on Saturday. He confirmed that a search of the vehicle uncovered a significant amount of suspected Indian hemp.
“The situation was brought under control with the help of my security detail, and the vehicle was later towed to the Akatsi Police Station for further investigation,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
Further examination revealed 378 small-sized, 43 flat-type, and 87 large compressed parcels of suspected marijuana, all packed in sacks.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is currently on the run. Akatsi Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend him.
The Volta Regional Police Command has since taken custody of the seized substances for continued investigation.
