During a recent visit to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, emphasized the critical need to uphold public safety and order, particularly amidst a surge in divisive online content leading up to the 2024 general elections.
Highlighting the alarming rise of inflammatory posts on social media platforms, Quartey warned of legal repercussions for individuals found spreading hate or fear-inducing material. He made it clear that those inciting violence or panic online would be subject to arrest and prosecution as per existing laws.
While reaffirming the importance of free speech and association, Quartey stressed the responsibility of citizens to communicate in a manner that preserves public peace and stability. He expressed concern over the widespread dissemination of threatening remarks online and assured decisive action against offenders.
In his address, Quartey commended the efforts of the police in maintaining security and pledged governmental support to enhance their capabilities, especially in the lead-up to and during the elections. He underscored the commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral process and promised to provide the necessary resources to enable the police to carry out their duties effectively.
“As we approach the 2024 elections, we are determined to uphold the principles of democracy and safeguard public order. Any attempts to disrupt the peace through online platforms will be met with swift and decisive action,” Quartey stated.
Furthermore, he reassured the public of the government’s commitment to non-interference in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of a fair and transparent election. Quartey concluded by promising continued support for the Ghana Police Service, including the provision of essential equipment to facilitate their professional conduct during the electoral period.
