The Ejisu Municipal Transport Union has staged a protest against the government over the deteriorating condition of the Ejisu–Onwe road, highlighting the serious safety risks and economic challenges faced by drivers and commuters.
According to the union, the road has been neglected for nearly two years, a situation that has disrupted transportation and livelihoods in the area.
The poor state of the road has forced many commercial drivers to suspend operations, making travel along the stretch extremely difficult.
Some commuters told Adom News that the scarcity of vehicles has compelled them to walk long distances between Ejisu and Onwe.
“Most drivers have stopped operating on this road because of its condition. Those who still drive here charge excessive fares, especially in the evenings. We are suffering and need urgent assistance,” one commuter said.
Another resident, Mary Oduom, who recently underwent surgery, described the road as a serious health hazard.
“Whenever I board a commercial vehicle, I ask the driver to reduce speed. Any small mistake could seriously harm me,” she explained.
Leading the protest, Ejisu Municipal Transport Union Chairman Kwaku Akyempem urged the government to include the Ejisu–Onwe road in the proposed Big Push infrastructure project.
He noted that many drivers have lost their jobs after vehicle owners withdrew their cars due to frequent breakdowns caused by the poor road conditions.
“Most of our vehicles have been taken away by their owners, leaving drivers unemployed,” he stated.
While appreciating the recent fuel price reduction, Mr. Akyempem emphasized the urgent need for road rehabilitation.
