Water supply to several communities in eastern Accra and the Tema Metropolis has been interrupted following the rupture of a major 42-inch transmission pipeline, according to Ghana Water Limited (GWL). The pipeline burst occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, disrupting the distribution of treated water along the eastern corridor of the capital.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 20, GWL said its technical team responded swiftly and has been working continuously to fix the damaged pipeline. The company noted that due to the large size of the pipe and the complexity of the repairs, the work must be carried out with caution to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the system.

GWL apologised to customers for the inconvenience and assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to restore water supply as quickly as possible.

Areas affected include the entire Tema Metropolis and parts of Accra such as Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, sections of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and nearby communities. The utility provider has advised essential service institutions, including hospitals and schools, to contact GWL for assistance during the repair period.

Customers may reach GWL through its toll-free line 0800 40000 (Telecel only), by phone on 0302 2218240, 0207 385 089, or 0207 385 090, or via WhatsApp on 0555 123 393 and 0555 155 524.

GWL confirmed that water supply will be restored immediately after the repairs are completed and pledged to keep the public informed with further updates.
