CAF Bans Samuel Eto’o for Misconduct at AFCON

- Samuel Eto’o receives a four-match ban and $20,000 fine from CAF
- Sanction relates to misconduct during AFCON quarter-final vs Morocco
- Eto’o’s tenure as FECAFOOT president continues to face controversy
Former Cameroon football star Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match ban and fined $20,000 (£14,960) after a Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary panel found him guilty of misconduct.
According to a CAF statement, Eto’o, who currently serves as president of Cameroon’s football federation (FECAFOOT), breached the body’s principles of sportsmanship during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Cameroon and Morocco. The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was reportedly seen making an angry gesture in reaction to several refereeing decisions as the Indomitable Lions fell 2-0 to the tournament hosts.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who was present at the Rabat stadium, appeared to witness Eto’o’s frustration firsthand. On Monday, the continental governing body announced an investigation into “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials” during the quarter-final matches.
In response, FECAFOOT rejected CAF’s ruling, describing the disciplinary process as one that “raises serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.” The federation expressed its support for Eto’o in a statement on Wednesday and indicated that he intends to appeal the sanction.
Since becoming FECAFOOT president in 2021, Eto’o’s reputation as a football legend has been clouded by controversies. He has faced allegations of misconduct and mismanagement, with some stakeholders criticizing irregularities within Cameroon’s football federation.
