  • Amanfo calls piracy a major setback for Ghana’s struggling film industry

Film director Pascal Amanfo has strongly condemned a Ghanaian television station for allegedly airing his newly released movie just hours after its YouTube premiere.

According to Amanfo, the film was officially released online at 11:00 a.m., but by 6:00 p.m. the same day, the TV station had broadcast it without authorization.

Visibly frustrated, the director described the incident as a serious setback for an industry he says is already “struggling to breathe.”

He explained that securing investors for Ghanaian productions is becoming increasingly challenging, and acts of piracy only exacerbate the situation. Amanfo revealed that the film was funded by a Nigerian colleague he personally convinced to invest in Ghana’s “ailing, almost comatose” movie industry.

Having the project pirated within hours, he noted, is not only disrespectful but also financially damaging for all involved.

Pascal Amanfo emphasised that people often underestimate the costs and sacrifices behind each production, warning that such actions undermine efforts to revive the industry and attract meaningful investment.

He pledged to take action on the matter and issued a stern warning to other media outlets against similar behaviour.
