Ghana strengthens vaccine manufacturing collaboration with Indonesia

- Ghana delegation visits Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali for high-level meetings
- Upcoming MoU between Ghana FDA and Indonesia’s BPOM
- Discussions on opening embassies in both countries
Ghana has made a major move to strengthen its vaccine manufacturing capacity and deepen ties with Indonesia after a high-level mission visited Jakarta and Bandung.
The delegation was led by the Honorary Consul of Indonesia in Ghana, H.E. Paskal A.B. Rois, and included officials from the National Vaccine Institute, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Atlantic Life Sciences Ltd., and the GIZ PharmaVax programme.
Before their official meetings, the team participated in the International Conference of Vaccine Manufacturers in Bali, followed by strategic engagements with key Indonesian government bodies.
Talks with Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance centered on regulatory collaboration, capacity development, and technology transfer. An MoU between Ghana’s FDA and BPOM is expected soon, supported by Indonesia AID.
The delegation also toured PT Bio Farma in Bandung, a global vaccine leader producing over three billion doses annually. A partnership between Bio Farma and Atlantic Life Sciences is set to pave the way for local production of Tetanus-Diphtheria vaccines in Ghana by 2026.
H.E. Rois noted that the renewed partnership reflects long-standing ties between the two nations dating back to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and President Sukarno. Discussions are underway for Indonesia to open an embassy in Ghana by 2026, with Ghana planning a reciprocal mission in Jakarta.
Beyond health, Ghana and Indonesia are exploring cooperation in energy, infrastructure, agriculture, industrialization, and education. The delegation also interacted with Ghanaian students in Indonesia who are currently on full scholarships.
H.E. Rois further suggested state visits between President John Dramani Mahama and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to solidify the growing partnership.
Overall, the visit marks a key milestone in Ghana–Indonesia relations and sets the foundation for broader collaboration under the South–South Cooperation framework.
