Francis Abu’s World Cup Recovery Boost

- Midfielder Francis Abu may still make Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad
- Successful surgery completed; recovery expected within four months
- Medical staff remain optimistic about his World Cup chances
Midfielder Francis Abu could still make Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, with encouraging news emerging from the Black Stars camp, according to Asempa FM.
The 25-year-old suffered a major setback in last Friday’s friendly loss to Japan in Toyota, leaving the game in the second half after fracturing his ankle. Abu, who started the match, was replaced by Alidu Seidu and transported by ambulance to Toyota Memorial Hospital. On Sunday, the Ghana Football Association confirmed he had undergone successful surgery. Although early reports suggested the Toulouse midfielder might miss the World Cup entirely, new updates offer a more hopeful outlook.
Nhyira FM’s Head of Sports, Bismark Owusu Bempah, reported on Asempa FM that the medical team is optimistic Abu could return to full fitness within four months—a recovery window that keeps him in contention for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
If his rehabilitation stays on track, Abu will be considered for selection for Ghana’s final World Cup squad next summer.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars continue their Asian tour with a reduced team. Ghana will play South Korea on Tuesday with only 19 players available, following the withdrawals of Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Salisu due to injury. Kick-off is at 10:00 a.m.
