MP John Darko Criticizes Suame Interchange Delay

Story Highlights
  • MP John Darko blames slow progress of Suame Interchange on unpaid Interim Payment Certificates
  • Contractors report halted work due to lack of payment for IPCs submitted in 2025
  • The £140 million Suame Interchange is just 13% complete

John Darko, Member of Parliament for Suame, has expressed concerns about the slow pace of the Suame Interchange project, blaming the delay on the government’s failure to pay interim payment certificates (IPCs) for work completed in 2025.

During a discussion on the Annual Audit Statements of the MMDAs in the middle sector, Mr. Darko revealed that none of the IPCs submitted by contractors this year had been paid, causing many workers to halt operations.

“The work is progressing very slowly. Just last week, I met with the contractor, and their team informed me that none of the IPCs have been settled. As a result, only a minimal workforce is keeping things going,” he stated.

Mr. Darko urged the government to settle the outstanding payment certificates to allow contractors to resume full-scale work, stressing that without the necessary funds, progress would remain stalled.

The £140 million, four-tier Suame Interchange, which is part of the first phase of the project, is currently just 13% complete. A significant delay has been caused by the need to relocate pipelines belonging to Ghana Water Limited.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene confirmed that the pipeline relocation had now been completed, following an inspection by the Transport and Roads Minister.

“As of now, the key issue has been resolved. The pipes have been successfully relaid, enabling contractors to proceed with pylon and pillar construction,” he explained.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed confidence that, with additional funding from the Finance Ministry, the project would be completed on time. He also noted that other road projects in Suame, Bantama, and nearby areas were progressing steadily.
